favorites is through... read more "express yourself through art" about us amaris (the “a” in aj) was born and raised on a cattle ranch in new mexico. although she loves the country life, she is currently experiencing life as a city girl in utah with joanie and the kids. amaris is a lover of the great outdoors and a sports enthusiast. she was actively involved in a variety of athletics growing up so staying healthy was always important to her. she was on the volleyball and track and field teams, but her passion was basketball and she continues to play today. during graduate school, amaris adopted a lifestyle of wellness that was more than just being physically healthy. she began studying the relationship between the seven core areas of life and concluded that true wellness is dependent on creating a balance between them. for her, this means building solid relationships that are emotionally satisfying and mutually supportive. it also means being a good steward of finances so that there is more freedom to serve others. it is the understanding that rest and relaxation are pivotal to overall good health. it also incorporates being grounded spiritually and doing something fulfilling to earn a living. these wellness principles are extremely important to amaris and she is very passionate about maintaining this balance. in addition to being the co-owner of aj wellness where she is working toward specializing in belly binding and placenta encapsulation, amaris holds a bachelor’s degree in family and child development from southern virginia university and a master’s degree in gerontology from the university of utah. a city girl at heart, joanie (the “j” in aj) has lived in california and maine but spent the last several years enjoying “life elevated” in utah. she appreciates time in the mountains but is truly happy on a bike or at the beach engulfed in a book. while living on the east coast, joanie had her first experience serving women when she became a volunteer at a crisis shelter. what began out of a need to serve, quickly developed into a passion for helping women achieve self-empowerment. during that time, she dreamed of becoming a midwife and delivering babies in her birkenstocks but the reality of a large family shifted her priorities and motherhood became her life’s work. ignoring her dreams and allowing social pressures to dictate her life, everything became challenging. stress was a constant and self care was non existent. the core areas of life were unbalanced which caused her look carefully at the direction of her life. after a thorough examination, joanie made significant changes that were both terrifying and liberating. once things began to settle, it was amaris who suggested joanie revisit the idea of birthwork. already on a new self directed path, she decided to embrace a career as a certified birth doula for all women and families but with an affection for the lgbt community. as co-owner of aj wellness, joanie is also a certified ideal life vision coach and a pre-certified birth doula and aromatherapist for pregnancy, birth and postpartum. why we care about wellness it wasn’t that long ago when we realized we needed to change several things about our life to create a ‘whole health’ lifestyle. the kids were dissatisfied in school, our diet included too much junk food, time on screens exceeded time outdoors and our jobs were unsatisfying. we realized almost every area of our lives needed an overhaul. we began by having dinner as a family at night. we brought in fresh fruits and vegetables as we phased out junk foods. we used essential oils to uplift our mood and help support rest and relaxation. we dusted off the bikes and started riding them as a family. we de-junked the home and created structure around bed times and daily routines. we even decided to homeschool the kids and make career changes. all of these things were met with resistance and difficulty but now the the kids respect the changes and take pride in it. changing so much at once was hard and sometimes we slip back into our old patterns but we started this journey to make a difference in our futures which naturally led us to inspire the future of others. this has now become our life’s work. our passion is self directed, empowered living and it is our mission is to motivate others to create exceptional lives. we believe
